What… You thought we ran out of team building ideas?

The possibilities are infinite… and we keep adding to the Team Building Library on allthingsmeetings.com… the general idea being, take these ideas and bring them home, modify them to fit your group… or do whatever else you need to do to be creative (and happy)…so…more…

Ice Sculpting

About six years ago I had the good fortune of being invited to visit some of the grandest Hotels of Switzerland (and for that I am eternally grateful to Marius Karrer…visit his site at www.hotelsofswitzerland.com), and as part of that site inspection we ended up on some glacier, only to find that our small group of incentive planning types would be divided up and asked to compete in an ice sculpture contest.

As I have said before, the idea of team-building initially makes me roll my inner eyes, but… there was no way out (except straight down) so I joined in… and of course got really into it (and ice sculpting was not something I had previously gotten into). It ended up being one of those memorable moments… incidentally capped off with a helicopter ride through the Swiss Alps.

Anyway…  that is why a team building idea from TeamBonding caught my eye… you guessed it… Ice Sculpting.

First of all… you don’t have to be on a glacier in the Swiss Alps to do it. You can do it anywhere (as in “if you can’t get to a giant block of ice, a giant block of ice will come to you”).

So getting phrases like “It’s a really cool idea” and “It’s a great ice-breaker” out of the way, they facilitate a three-hour event (chisels and gloves provided, chainsaws not provided). Check it out at https://www.teambonding.com/programs/ice-sculpting/

Making a Movie

Back in 1983 I was on-site in Hawaii at Apple Computer’s annual sales meeting. My assignment: to manage their off-site theme party on a resort’s golf course overlooking the ocean. And by manage… for the most part it involved letting a lot of very professional people do their work. We hired vendors to a) build a movie set for a cowboy western… a complete Main Street with a multitude of saloons, jail, general store, livery stable, all the trimmings and b) the director, film crew and stunt team from Hawaii Five-O, along with an entourage of in-character and costume actors to run the casinos and card games and in general to give the whole scene some “color”.

When the 300 or so Apple salespeople arrived (my, how they’ve grown), they were also given basic costumes and let loose on the set to party and be “extras” in what turned out to be a Cowboy Movie about ridding the town of “Big Blue” (sounds funny now).  The whole party, with the Apple executives as “stars”, was professionally filmed, edited, and shown at their final banquet the next evening to overwhelming applause and standing ovation… and all I can say is… it was probably the most fun party I ever worked on… and based on the amount of alcohol consumed, I am guessing a lot of people felt that way too.

Don’t have the budget for that kind of thing? No worries… you can still make a movie. :)

Feet First Eventertainment (www.feetfirstevents.com) has produced hundreds of team building movie productions on the back lots of film studios, in parks and in hotel meeting rooms.  Team sizes range from 10 to 25 (so everyone can be involved).

Each team draws the name of a famous movie out of a hat (doesn’t have to be a hat), and they test their cooperative skills by determining how to best use their teammates’ strengths to produce the best Movie Preview possible of that famous movie’s sequel (director, camera person, boom person, costumer, sound person, editor, and of course, the actors). They can tie the sequel to your company theme, or make a commercial about your product… or about… anything really. Sky’s the limit.

Teams receive all the professional equipment necessary to make their movie preview, plus a Producer (a Feet First facilitator) to ensure that they know how to use the equipment properly and stay on track.  After all shooting is completed and edited, the previews are screened to the entire group. Perhaps at an Academy Awards-style theme banquet? (ooh, idea for another blog).

So… there are a few more ideas to add to our Team Building Library. Check it all out … and please let me know if you know of any other really cool team building ideas we can research and add to the Library. Thanks!
