Cliff Lede Vineyards

Cliff Lede Vineyards

Cliff Lede Vineyards (Yountville)

Located on 60 acres in the famed Stags Leap District, this beautiful venue offers five indoor and outdoor spaces for up to 150 guests. The contemporary steel and wood architecture, floor to ceiling glass doors, the beautiful vineyard views, museum-quality art, and the general feeling that Cliff Lede (the guy) really likes rock & roll, makes this a venue you should definitely consider. And as an extra note… they also own the Poetry Inn, a five bedroom luxury Inn perched directly above the property… just in case. www.ledefamilywines.com

Two Spots for Formal or Casual Dining – Great Food - Napa, CA

Bottega, Napa Valley

Bottega, Napa Valley

Bottega Napa Valley and Ottimo

Located in the middle of Vintage Estates (between Villagio and Vintage Inn), Bottega Ristorante has long been a favorite venue for private dining (for groups from 12 to 120). There are three private rooms, plus you can also take over the whole place (il Tutto) that could accommodate up to 200. As an aside… the food and service is great. www.botteganapavalley.com

Just across from Bottega is Ottimo, a casual dining spot that can be taken over and transformed into a formal dining room for up to 100. One idea… have your dinner in Bottega and then walk over to Ottimo for late-night partying. I vaguely remember the days when that sounded like fun. www.ottimo-nv.com

400-acre Carmel Valley property includes a stone hacienda, vineyards, wine caves, an olive grove, horse stables - Carmel Valley, CA

holman.jpg

Holman Ranch & Vineyards

This 10-room 400-acre Carmel Valley property includes a stone hacienda, vineyards, wine caves, an olive grove, horse stables and not one, but two tasting rooms. The Ranch is available for all sorts of events, both indoors and out, regardless of whether you are staying on property. Each of their many outdoor spaces can individually hold 200+ for an event, but since they only take one event at a time, you could conceivably take over the whole ranch and invite everyone you have ever met. It’s a beautiful spot. www.holmanranch.com

Hotel and a Venue “Nestled” on 330 acres - Carmel, CA

Stonepine Estate (both as a hotel and a venue)

Many resorts seem to be nestled somewhere, and The Stonepine Estate is no exception. “Nestled” on 330 acres in Carmel Valley, the Estate (as a hotel) features an eight-bedroom chateau and three houses, totaling 16 guest rooms. The estate offers a very high-level of service combined with creativity and friendliness, and is a perfect venue for Board meetings and retreats.

As a venue (regardless of whether you are staying there or at another property), they can accommodate groups up to 250 and do all sorts of themed parties and events (my personal experience there involved a private demonstration of amazing horsemanship… combined with a delicious BBQ).  Besides the western themes easily incorporated into their equestrian center, other, more elegant settings are a natural for Great Gatsby type events (or other themes in which people pretend to be rich and carefree). Anyway, whatever the theme, they are good there. www.stonepineestate.com

The Blue Note Napa Is A Jazz Club/Gourmet Restaurant Occupying The Historic Napa Valley Opera House

Blue Note Napa

Ready for this… in 1972 I was first alternate tenor sax player for the New York All-State High School Jazz Band. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for the Band), no one got sick so I didn’t get to play. Why am I telling you this? Because back in the early 70’s in NYC, I would often go to the legendary Blue Note to hear my jazz heroes blow my mind.

And now… in keeping with the “Jazz is Important” tradition, The Blue Note Napa is a jazz club/gourmet restaurant occupying the first floor of the historic Napa Valley Opera House, and you (and your group) can buy it out, eat, drink, and be merry. You don’t have to listen to jazz, you can bring in anyone you want, but the place is all set up for that intimate club experience. www.bluenotenapa.com

Online Marketplace To Find And Book Meeting, Event And Production Space, Exclusive Private Venues You Can't Find Anywhere Else - San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin And Chicago

Peerspace Update

Full Disclosure: Peerspace will be a sponsor of the All Things Meetings 16th Annual Silicon Valley Reception & Trade Show on July 26, 2017 at Forager, the new downtown venue in San Jose. I am VERY big on keeping the editorial part of my blogs and newsletter separate from any conflicts of interest. Can I still write about them?

Yes. (Because) I had written about Peerspace in one of my first blogs, long before the sponsorship thing. And why had I written about them? Because it’s a cool idea. Why am I writing an update? Two reasons… 1. it’s still a cool idea and 2. I would not have found Forager, a very cool, new venue, if it wasn’t for their listing on Peerspace. I went to the site, looked around, said hey, I never heard of that, looks good, and booked it without a problem. Since they “did good” once again, now’s a good time for an update. So… here’s the story…

Peerspace is an online marketplace to find and book meeting, event and production space, often private venues you could not find anywhere else. They currently support bookings in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin and Chicago, with additional metros coming soon. In addition, they have support staff that can help you identify what venue might work best for you, and then connect you with preferred vendors from catering to A/V to entertainment. And they are really nice.

Note… they charge a reasonable fee for their services. My first reaction to that is… they do? But when you think about it, factoring in the “I never would have found this place on my own and it was so easy to set it up” thing,, it’s worth it.

Want To Do Something REALLY Memorable (And Have The Budget For It) - San Luis Obispo County, California

There are over 200 wineries to choose from, but if you want to do something REALLY memorable (and have the budget for it), you can have a private event at Hearst Castle. If you haven’t been there, it is pretty awesome in the “I can’t believe how rich this guy was (talk about the .0001%) and I really wish I was alive then and somehow knew him and got invited to one of his parties because that must have been awesome” kind of thing. On the other hand, I might have just taken a swing at him on general principles so it’s a good thing I wasn’t there. But, since we tend to whitewash history and make it fun…

The hilltop estate may be reserved for private events when it is not in conflict with their regularly scheduled tours. Every special event is held outdoors on one of the Castle’s many (and I mean many) picturesque terraces and must include a tour (which you wanted anyway). Couple of things to remember… you need to make a reservation at least four months in advance and you have to have a lot of money.

Assuming you can do that… definitely a wow. www.hearstcastle.org

Iconic Venue Has Several Private and Semi-Private Areas - Monterey, CA

sardine-factory-conservatory-monterey-private-rooms.jpg

The Sardine Factory

Speaking of iconic venues, The Sardine Factory has been doing what they do since 1968. It’s now a tradition that if you are anybody who is anybody, you dine there when you’re in town. It deserves its reputation (as in, it’s really good and deserves its reputation).

They take groups and because the restaurant has several private and semi-private areas, they can be very flexible with group size. In addition, they have a great private dining room in their wine cellar (for up to 28) and can do wine tastings, food and wine pairings, and… a lot of eating and drinking. www.sardinefactory.com

This Museum Has Event Spaces And Galleries Can Accommodate Anything From A Private Board Dinner To A Reception For 1,000 – San Francisco, CA

The Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park

Legion-Of-Honor-various-spaces-to-accomodate-all-types-of-events

The first thing you notice when you walk up to the museum… one of the original casts of Rodan’s, The Thinker. (and by Rodan I mean the famous French sculptor, not the giant bird-like creature that terrorized Japan when I was a kid). So you know it’s classy.

The museum features lots of European paintings, sculpture and decorative art… and between the various event spaces and galleries can accommodate anything from a private Board Dinner to a reception for 1,000. Note… the grounds of the museum have great views of the Golden Gate and the Pacific Ocean… but it is “way out there” at the edge of the continent… so depending on where your group is coming from and how they are arriving… you have to want to be there. But once there… it’s cool.

You can rent the whole art museum (for as group up to around 2000+) or just some of the individual space – San Francisco, CA

De Young Museum, Golden Gate Park

Some cultural institution facts: The de Young is the most visited art museum west of the Mississippi, the sixth most visited in North America and the 35th most visited in the world. So… there must be something to it. :)

You can rent the whole place (for as group up to around 2000+) or just some of the individual spaces… and other than the usual museum restrictions (like you can’t bring F&B into the galleries), you can eat, drink, dance… and get some private tours of the art stuff… and just feel classy in general. https://deyoung.famsf.org/

This Smithsonian Affiliate Museum Is Not Huge, But Has Four Event Spaces Suitable For Groups – San Francisco, CA

museum-intimate-suite-for medium-sized-groups

The Museum of the African Diaspora

As part of the Yerba Buena Gardens Complex, and connected to the St. Regis Hotel, the MOAD also has the Location thing going for it. As museums go, it’s relatively new (opened in 2005), and in 2014 it was named a Smithsonian Affiliate (in the Museum Universe that is very impressive). The museum is not huge by museum standards, but has four event spaces suitable for groups, the largest can do about 250 for a standing reception. And… as I seem to be fond of saying… check it out. https://www.moadsf.org/

This masterpiece of a museum is now the Bay Area’s largest at 460,000 sq ft

SFMOMA (as in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)

This masterpiece of a museum re-opened in 2016 after a three-year expansion… and is now, at 460,000 square feet (!) is the Bay Area’s largest. There are all sorts of rental possibilities and combinations… from “soaring cathedral ceilings to open-air sculpture gardens…and twinkling cityscapes” (I lifted that from their web site), so what I mean to say is… it’s cool.

As web sites like to say, they are “situated in the heart of San Francisco”. And they are. https://www.sfmoma.org/

If You Need to Accommodate A Large Group Exploratorium is BIG as in 100,000 sq ft - San Francisco, CA

Great-space-for-a-large-group-in-San-Francsicso

As their web site says… “The Exploratorium isn't just a museum; it's an ongoing exploration of science, art and human perception—a vast collection of online experiences that feed your curiosity.” Another key word that keeps showing up… “interactive”. Put another way… it’s a museum where everyone can be a kid and that is a good thing.

The museum is BIG (as in 100,000 square feet)… so if you have a BIG group (max seated is 1100, max standing is 3500) it can accommodate pretty much anything, but it is also divided into galleries that can be rented separately for smaller events. Many of the galleries (and combinations thereof) have great views of both the city and the Bay, plus your group can play with all of the contraptions the museum is famous for.

Note… it is a museum and so there are always some restrictions, some timing issues, and a lot of other fine print… but if you can work with that, everyone loves the place. https://www.exploratorium.edu/

Need A Big, Cool Space, Close To The Moscone Center And Downtown San Francisco, CA

City View at Metreon (www.cityviewmetreon.com)

Need a big, cool space, close to the Moscone Center and downtown SF? Then you kind of have to consider City View. It has a 14,500 square foot main room, a 3500 square foot lobby and…. Drum roll please… a 12,000 square foot terrace with an exceptional view of the city. They are just undergoing (spring 2017) a major renovation, but when they re-open (soon)…. It just has to be in your consideration set (ooh, I got to use the phrase “consideration set”). Check it out.

The Old San Francisco Federal Reserve Building Was Renovated In 2005

Bentley Reserve (http://bentlyreserve.com)

They knew how to build stuff back then. Originally built in 1924, the old San Francisco Federal Reserve Building was renovated in 2005 and while the upper floors are leased to some prominent businesses, the 8,045 square foot ground floor Banking Hall is available for private events.
